These days we are looking into the concept of Artificial Intelligence. We see machines we find machines which learn on their own and help human beings.

Cognitive Process

But how these computer machines trained? How to think like a human? We require to understand the human brain functions or the human mind functions? Once we clear about the cognitive processes what goes on into the human mind when it does something when it produces the input, we are able to train this artificial intelligence which learns on their own. The machine which lessens the load of the human being.

But the question is this how does reading happen! The psychologist gave their fullest effort to solve the mental phenomenon to under the interpretation. The text is just a few mental processes, it involves visual perception and analysis of the letter is consists in converting those letter to some sounds. Reading involves to make meaning out of some stimuli and understanding and doing whatever particular purpose.

Let us take an example, you are playing a particular sport. You may be not good at cricket and what you’re doing is you’re standing as a fielder somewhere in the ground and catching the ball. Catching a ball involve looking the ball and getting the shape of the ball and computing the speed of the ball, and it consists of the motor circuit to match the pace of the ball which makes sure you catch the ball. Fielding is a broad behavior, but we are trying to break the chunks of different mental processes into perception, attention and other methods.

Before we move on to the detailed explanation of cognitive psychology, let’s move on to the definition of the Parental Branch.

What is Behavior?

Behavior | It is responses or reaction to the events & action in the world. Also, spontaneous activity to achieve various goals or motives. We are surrounded by agents like people or situation. You might have a goal of becoming a singer. This type of desire is also a part called behavior.

Complex Behavior & Simple Behavior

Simple Behavior: Simple behavior is the purest instance of a stimulus and a response. e.g., when you were trying to touch a needle, but you will take your hand back very quickly. It is the response to you being pricked.

Complex Behavior: The activities which involve a chain of elementary behaviour, e.g. you want to make a cup of coffee for yourself. Preparing coffee involves many small-small processes like add milk, mix sugar and coffee and pour it on the coffee mug.

Overt Behavior Vs. Covert Behavior

Overt behavior is merely the behavior that can be observed by others, the actions let you do, the things which you say, this is Overt meaning of Behavior.

Covert Behavior is something that is typically going on in your mind things like you would experiencing, feeling of attraction, touching of anger. These sort of activities is going inside your brain. These are the example of the covert meaning of behavior.

Cognitive Psychology

Cognitive psychology is the branch of psychology which is devoted to scientific study of the ‘mind.’ Let’s discuss the mind in detail by these two phrases.

  1. “He was able to call to mind what he was doing on the day of the accident.”
  2. “I’m sure you can solve that math problem, if you use your mind.”(The mind as problem-solver)
  3. “I haven’t made up my mind yet” or “I’m of two minds about this.”(The mind as used to make the decision or consider possibilities)
  4. “He is of sound mind and body” or “When he talks about his encounter with aliens, it sounds like he is out of his mind.” (A healthy mind being associated with normal functioning, a nonfunctioning mind with abnormal functioning.”
  • In the first sentence, people are referring to mind. The person is actually trying to recall what is involved in a particular accident.
  • In the second sentence if you apply your mind, then you can able to solve a math problem. In this case, a person is actually taking mind as a problem solver. So, the mind must be able to help you address particular issues, the account must be able to help you choose specific decisions, have appropriate algorithms take concrete steps and then reach a final goal.
  • In the third sentence, it is an instance in which mind is being used to make a decision or consider or evaluate possibilities.
  • In the fourth sentence, when he talks about his encounter with aliens, it seems like he is out of his mind.

Here you can see that sense is that a healthy mind is associated with normal functioning and non-functioning is being associated with an abnormal operation. The intention is capable of taking the right decision or say something which connects to reality.

Mind creates and controls mental functions such as memory, thinking, and reasoning, emotions, perception, attention, language, deciding. The brain is the system that creates a mental representation of the world so that we act accordingly to achieve our particular goals.

“As Raphael is walking across the campus, talking to Susan on his cell phone about meeting at the student union later this afternoon, he remembers that he left the book she had lent him at home. “I can’t believe it,” he thinks, “I can see it sitting there on my desk, where I left it. I should have put it in my backpack last night when I was thinking about it.”

As he finishes his call with Susan and makes a mental note to be on time for their appointment, his thought shift to how he is going to survive after Wednesday when his car is scheduled to go into the shop. Renting a car offers the most mobility, but it expensive. Bumming rides from his roommate are cheap but limiting. “Perhaps I’ll pick up a bus schedule at the student union,” he thinks, as he puts his cell phone in his pocket.

Entering his anthropology class, he remembers that an exam is coming up soon. Unfortunately, he still has a lot of reading to do, so he decides that it won’t be able to take Susan to the movies tonight, as they had planned because he needs time to study. As the lecture begins, Raphael is anticipating, with some anxiety, his meeting with Susan.

This is a simple instance from a whole day. You can pick up yourself and just examine one such example, you will realize that at one point of time a lot of different things are going on your mind.

  • Perceives his environment – Seeing people on campus walking around, hearing Susan talking on the phone.
  • Pay attention – to one thing after another – the person approaching his left, what Susan is saying, how much time is left for class
  • Remember – Something from the past – that he had told Susan, he was going to return her book today.
  • Distinguishes items in a category – When he thinks about different possible forms of transportation – rental car, roommate car, bus.
  • He is evaluating possibilities, he is visualizing. He visualizes the book on his desk the night before.
  • Understand and Produces Language as he talks to Susan to understand what is she saying and answer her back and producing language while talking to Susan
  • Works to solve a problem – as he thinks about how to get to places while his car is in the shop.  He actually has a problem while the conversation is going on also needs to evaluate these possibilities.
  • Makes a decision – when he decides to postpone going to the movies with Susan so he can study.

You are seeing that, In a particular moment, we are involved in a variety of mental functions. Types of different decisions we have to take, also doing things at the same point.

Like the same thing happened to you. You are reading my article, you are remembering something, also thinking to yourself. Also, making decisions to continue to read the article or close the tab.
