Prejudice meaning| Social Psychologists tried to characterize bias from various perspectives. Some psychologists define Prejudice as a preconceived irrational judgment, while others describe it as an expression of dislike against members of some religion, race or group. Secord and Bachmann gave “Prejudice is an attitude that predisposes a person to think, perceive, feel and act in favorable and unfavorable ways towards a group or its individuals.” According to Baron and Byrne “Prejudice is commonly a negative demeanor towards the individuals from some social, ethnic or religious.”Prejudice meaning be it negative or positive is distinctly a mentality and has all the three parts of attitude, i.e. affective, cognitive and behavioral.

Characteristics of Prejudice

Prejudice is functional: Prejudice helps the individual justify his hostilities, repressed desires and strengthen feelings of self-esteem and prestige. Prejudice helps individual to explain his exploitation, discrimination of members of another group.

Emotional Overtones: Prejudice is always colored with emotions. It is either for or against some gathering, network or religion.

Prejudice has no connection with reality: It is primarily based on hearsay, incomplete and wrong information, customs and traditions of the society. It can’t stand the test of logic and reasoning.

Partiality is unreasonable: Prejudice does not fit reason, understanding, and importance. The individual does not change his prejudice in the face of information and evidence to the contrary.

Prejudice is acquired: Like attitude, bias is obtained through the process of learning and socialization.

Types of Prejudice

Language prejudice: This is frequently clear when we go to various parts of India. Especially in South India, it is incredibly apparent. They want to communicate in English however not Hindi regardless of whether they know Hindi. In fact the organization of states in Indian has been on Linguistic basis.

Sex Prejudice: This is for centuries women have been the target of Prejudice. They have been the idea of frail, subordinate and mentally less skilled than men.

Religious bias: This has been an urgent issue in India since pre-independence days. Production of Pakistan was merely because of religious contrasts. In religious prejudice, the individual holds favorable toward his religion and hostile attitude toward other religion. Consequently, misunderstanding and misconceptions about people of other faiths crop up.

Caste Prejudice: Indian social structure is the best case of such partiality. Society is divided into numerous castes, and each rank is believed to have specific characteristics.

Racial Prejudice: This is gone for individuals from another race. For instance, Negros have been subject to racial preference because of whites. So also, Jews were an objective of bias by Nazis in Germany. Hitler went to the degree of annihilating at a mass scale.
