Let’s start our discussion on the memory with an easy question. Do you remember the last ball of the Cricket World Cup in 2011 or the Usain Bolts retirement race? I know you must remember it. Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit the six to win the championship of World Cup. It was a proud moment for India and proud moment to the world respectively.

Memory – A process Information Retrieval from Mind Storage

Memory is the process of retrieval. Memory is the process of retrieval. Either you know about cricket, you know some facts about football, you know how to cook etc. All are part of the memory. The main feature of the memory is retrieval.  Memory helps for an individual to know who are they. Imagine a situation if someone has no memory, then people fail to learn new things, process further information.

It is the memory who do basic processing for retrieving, store and encode vice versa.

Memory is one of the most basic processes that we use in our daily life. Right from the first hour in the morning from the last hour before sleep, “the most important” part is the smooth running of our life. Psychologist defines memory as “Memory in an organism ability to store, retain and recall information.

Metaphors or Models of Memory

Plato Comparision – Plato compares about memory to a wax tablet, where you take the positive impression when you don’t need it these expressions are taken away or moulded back. These viewpoints talk about memory as a storage system.  The way you process information in your mind is called retrieval. But, where you get the information in the storage part.

Modal Model of Memory – With the advent of computers and additional knowledge psychologist were able to define memory at a more deeper level. According to the model, information which passed from the perceptual processes and through the attentional processes, these arrive at something called Sensory register. A Sensory register is a kind of a buffer which has a property to store a lot of information. This information has passed on to the next store which is called it a Short Term Store. After a processing memory is passed on the destination store which is Long Term Store.

Modal Model of Memory suggest memory compromises of three stores for processing of the information –

  1. Sensory Register
  2. Short Term Store or The Working Memory
  3. Long Term Store

Sensory Memory

It is closely related to the perception. It refers to primary brief storage of sensory information – what you retain after a view. Sensory memory is connected to our senses. We have five senses. So, sensory memory has five types also. Icon memory as visual memory, echo memory as an auditory memory, haptic memory for the touch.

Memory Loss

Memory is moldable, it is a fact that it can be improved as well. Memory loss is starting to happen as you proceed towards your old age. It can be distorted by accident, brain injury, Dementia, or stress. The concept of false memories is also created in our Long Term Memory, which tells we can’t retrieve an event just after one hour of its completion. We have lost 50% of consciousness in only one hour for a particular event.

People who do not have memory are called Amnics. We know the well-known disease of memory disorder by Amnesia. Amnesia’s patient is not able to remember anything.

Amnesia is of two types.

Retrograde Amnesia – People are not able to retrieve memory from the mental store.
Anterograde Amnesia – People are not able to form memories what is happening right now.
Both of the Amnesia is focused on the facts where people are not able to form memories what is happening right now. When you see a person, the appreciation of memory is really difficult.

A person who has no STM(Short term memory). Clive Wearing is a type of Amnesia in which person is not able to form memories to encode something new. The condition gonna be worst to the level where if you talk to the person for two minutes. Can you imagine the life of a person where anybody cannot remember you for some time of two minutes? It is like the hell of a life.

Clive wearing would become so difficult of a person to survive because you would not be able to form memories, you will not be able to encode, you won’t be able to store something new. This is the type of the Amnesia where first memory is not encrypted. If questions were asked to him about which happened before the phase when he suffered from some sort of accident or the mental injury. That information which was stored which he was aware of before his accident they were perfectly intaking. But, he has not able to remember something that is happening right now.
