Visuospatial Sketchpad – Visuospatial sketchpad is really a crucial part of the working memory and a value for the manager of working memory i.e central executive. Visuospatial Sketchpad is responsible for the processing of special or spatial information. The special information or spatial information requires a visual medium. The visuo spatial sketchpad is responsible for processing the visual information for the working memory.

Working of the Visuospatial Sketchpad

Visuo spatial Sketchpad is the third subsystem of the working memory. If the information is not in the vocal period then the information is passed on to the visuospatial sketchpad.

In Visual sketchpad, information is broken down into visual constituents. The break down of the visual information is done by the visuospatial sketchpad. Visuospatial sketchpad is the answer to store the visual images.

Consider the sentence “Sam is going to attend the cognitive psychology class”

Information Processing Approach in sketchpad

working memory, visuospatial sketchpad

You have to process the information through the visual medium like video editing, poster making, sketch designing, etc. You have to look at the image and make meaning out of it. The visual memory is so accurate that builds in your LTM.

Whenever you watch a youtube video or watch a movie certain scenes are passing on through your eyes.

We can understand the whole idea of the working memory from the movie.

You hear a dialogue then it goes process to the phonological loop from the central executive. At the same time, you try to find out the meaning from the video this visual information is sent to the visuospatial sketchpad for processing.

Visuospatial sketchpad is the part of the working memory. Let’s try to understand the working memory.

Working Memory

Working memory is described by the two psychologists Atkinson and Shiffrin. According to the Atkinson and Shiffrin working memory describes the information processing in two steps-

  1. The information representation being stored called either as STM/LTM
  2. The STS and LTS are the storing structure of the memory

Atkinson and Shiffrin also find that information in STS somehow activates relevant information from LTS and gather some of the information in STS.

Working Memory Definition

Working memory consists of a limited capacity of the ‘workspace’ that can be divided between storage and control processing. It has the three subsystems

  1. The first is a central executive – This component directs the flow of information, choosing which information flow when and how.
  2. The second one is the phonological loop – which is used to carry out a subvocal rehearsal to maintain verbal material.
  3. The third one is visuospatial sketchpad – which is used to maintain visual material through visualization
